Density physics and liquid displacement constants

Why candlemakers who pour by fluid ounces experience sunken tops and fragrance separation.

Liquid vs Solid Density Liquid water weighs exactly 1.00 gram per milliliter. Solidified vegetable triglycerides weigh 0.86 grams per milliliter. Pouring a 9 fluid ounce jar using 9 ounces of dry flakes overfills the container by 14%, leading to spilled wax when wicks are centered.
Fragrance Oil Weight Aromatic compounds vary in density from 0.94 to 1.08 g/ml. For precise hot-throw replication, fragrance loads must always be weighed on digital gram balances rather than measured in volumetric dropper pipettes.
Wick Calibration Thresholds A wick that is one size too small causes tunneling; one size too large generates mushrooming carbon and soot. Our diameter pairings are derived from 120-hour side-by-side burn trials in our Austin laboratory. Review our calibrated cotton and wood wicks selection.
Fourteen-Day Crystallization Calculated formulas require complete polymorphic crystal settlement. Poured vessels must cure undisturbed for fourteen days to allow the triglyceride chains to lock aromatic esters into the matrix without weeping.

Frequently answered formulation questions

Straightforward bench solutions to common wax calculation and wick sizing problems.

Why does the calculator use 0.86 instead of water’s 1.00 density?
Vegetable oils and hydrogenated soy waxes are less dense than water. One milliliter of molten soy wax weighs approximately 0.86 grams. If you melt 266 grams of wax to fill a 266 ml jar, the melted volume will overflow the rim by more than 35 milliliters. Using 0.86 ensures the liquid wax reaches the exact shoulder fill line.
What happens if I increase the fragrance load beyond 10%?
Pure soy wax (Golden 464) has a maximum saturation binding capacity of 10% by weight. Exceeding 10% causes fragrance oil weeping, where unbonded aromatic esters pool on the cured surface or sweat out along the glass edge. These liquid pools create flame flare-ups and smoking. Keep loads between 6% and 9% for optimal crystal stabilization.
When should I choose dual wicks over a single large wick?
Any vessel with an inside diameter exceeding 75mm benefits from a dual-wick configuration. A single wick large enough to melt an 88mm diameter pool generates an excessively tall flame (over 1.5 inches), causing glass overheating and smoke. Two smaller Series 1 or Series 2 wicks spaced 25mm to 30mm apart distribute thermal energy evenly without torching the rim.
Can I learn these formulation techniques hands-on in Austin?
Yes. We host practical 2-hour sessions at our 1301 Barton Springs Road studio. Participants weigh, calculate, scent, and pour their own custom vessel from scratch. Book a seat for $25.99 on our Austin candlemaking workshop page.
