Fourteen-Day Cure Curves Stabilize Crystal Matrices

Finished candles cure for fourteen full days before dispatch to ensure complete crystal matrix stabilization. Lighting a soy candle within forty-eight hours burns unbonded liquid oil, collapses the melt pool, and permanently halves aromatic diffusion.

Artisan Leadership
Led by an experienced candle maker operating in Austin since 2020
Standard Core Pours
Finished candle 9 oz single wick at 28 USD | Finished candle 16 oz double wick at 38 USD
In-Person Instruction
Candlemaking workshop at 25.99 USD per person at 1301 Barton Springs Road
Catalog Pricing Policy
Component supplies are inquiry-only. Final quotes depend on volume, container selection, fragrance concentration, and freight logistics.

The Physics of Candle Curing Timelines

Natural vegetable waxes are triglycerides that crystallize in polymorphic phases (alpha, beta-prime, and beta). As molten wax cools to room temperature, it solidifies rapidly into a fragile alpha structure. Full thermodynamic stability requires fourteen days in dark, climate-controlled conditions.

Cure Timeline Crystal Phase Fragrance Oil Matrix Status Hot Throw Efficiency Melt Pool Stability
Hour 0 to Hour 24 Alpha polymorphic lattice Free liquid droplets trapped mechanically 20% – 30% of target Extreme tunneling risk
Day 2 to Day 4 Beta-prime transitional state Hydrogen bonding initiates between lipid chains 45% – 55% of target Uneven melt radius
Day 5 to Day 8 Dense crystalline reorganization Intermolecular entrapment of volatile esters 70% – 80% of target Uniform edge-to-edge pool
Day 9 to Day 14 Beta stable terminal matrix Complete chemical encapsulation of compound 100% full diffusion Optimal thermal equilibrium
Storage Temperature
Curing shelves in our Austin facility are held between 68°F and 72°F (20°C to 22°C) with relative humidity below 50%. Direct sunlight or draft exposure during cure induces surface frosting.
Coconut-Apricot Variance
Softer coconut apricot creme wax blends stabilize faster, reaching 90% thermodynamic binding within 7 days. We still mandate a 10-day holding protocol prior to dispatch.
Pure Beeswax Variance
Dense beeswax pellets form an immediate dense matrix. However, fragrance absorption is minimal (6% ceiling). Full aromatic release requires 14 full days to avoid wick clogging.

Wick Trimming & Tunneling Prevention

Wick sizing is calibrated to exact vessel inside diameters to prevent tunneling and soot accumulation. The initial burn sets the memory of the wax pool. If the first burn is terminated before liquid reaches the jar perimeter, the candle will tunnel permanently down that cylinder.

Cotton Wick Trim Height
0.25 inch (6 mm) prior to every ignition
Wood Wick Trim Height
0.125 inch to 0.187 inch (3 mm to 5 mm)
First Burn Duration Rule
Burn 1 hour per 1 inch of jar diameter. For our 9 oz amber jar (72mm / 2.83 in), the first burn must run continuously for 3.0 to 3.5 hours until molten wax touches the glass wall.
Maximum Single Burn Session
Never exceed 4 consecutive hours. Prolonged burning over-heats the jar bottom, carbonizes the wick core, and increases soot yield by over 300%.
Extinguishing Protocol
Use a brass wick dipper to submerge the flame into the liquid pool and immediately re-center upright, or cover with a snuffer. Never blow out a hot wick; blowing ejects carbon sparks and releases smoke into the room.

Bench Burn Rate Testing Methodology

Before approving any component pairing for custom contract pouring or wholesale catalog supply, our Austin workshop runs four consecutive four-hour test burns. We measure hourly wax consumption in grams, flame height, and jar surface temperatures.

Test Metric Target Range Failure Indicator (Under-Wicked) Failure Indicator (Over-Wicked)
Wax Consumption Rate 3.5 g to 4.2 g / hour (9 oz) < 2.8 g / hour (tunneling) > 5.2 g / hour (scorched oil)
Melt Pool Depth 0.25 in to 0.50 in (6 mm to 12 mm) < 0.15 in (pool collapses) > 0.75 in (excessive thermal mass)
Flame Height 0.75 in to 1.25 in (19 mm to 32 mm) < 0.50 in (struggles, drowns) > 1.75 in (flickers, mushrooms)
Jar External Wall Temp < 140°F (< 60°C) N/A (cooler than nominal) > 165°F (risk of glass fracture)
Carbon Mushrooming Zero to minimal cap Drowned wick tip Dense bulbous carbon deposit
Failure Mode: Drowned Wick
Under-sizing the wick diameter prevents the flame from sustaining enough thermal energy to consume melted wax flakes, drowning the flame in liquid within 90 minutes.
Failure Mode: Thermal Stress
Over-sizing produces dual convection currents that overheat vessel walls, destabilizing the fragrance oils and leaving black carbon soot rings on the rim.
